Circle of Ash and Song an Excerpt

Circle of Fire

The day after the heir’s demand, Sanctuary woke with fire in its veins. Not fear—resolve.

Wolves hauled timber and stone before the sun crested the horizon, their breath rising in clouds. The sound of hammers and saws filled the clearing, layered with humming voices and whispered prayers.

“This won’t just be a lodge,” Deborah declared, pacing the framework with her notebook. “Every beam will carry weight, every wall will mean something. We’re not building for comfort—we’re building for war.”

Priscilla hummed as she worked beside the others, her tone weaving through the clamor. The resonance sank into the wood itself, a steady vibration that wolves swore they could feel in their chests.

“Let it sing before it’s even finished,” she said with a grin.

Naomi knelt at the gate, pressing her palms to the half-buried posts. Her voice rose in prayer, psalm weaving into the grain.

“Sanctify these walls, Lord, make them shield and sanctuary, unshaken even by flame.”

Esabella sat cross-legged on a stone slab, her journal open. She sketched notes and strange markings, her pencil racing. When Eliana bent to look, her daughter pointed to the lines—channels carved into beams, tuned to hum when touched.

Warning in the bones, she wrote. The walls themselves will sing.

Eliana kissed her hair, pride swelling even through fear. “Your voice, even without singing, is shaping this place.”

Asher strode among them, storm-grey eyes watching, steadying. He paused at Esabella’s sketch, nodding once.

“We’ll cut the grooves tonight. The resonance will carry through the whole frame.” He looked at Eliana then, his voice softer. “Storm and song—woven together. That’s what makes us strong.”

Her chest tightened at the way he said us.

By evening, the wolves gathered around the central fire. Not for mourning this time, but for oath.

Deborah read the plans aloud, her voice clipped but certain: “Rotating watchtowers. Inner wall layered with resonance stones. Firebreak trenches cut to the south. Training doubled.” She snapped her notebook shut. “Every wolf plays a part, from pups to elders. We are the circle.”

Priscilla’s hum rose, Naomi’s psalm followed, and the pack joined in, voices weaving together until the air itself vibrated. Esabella added her trembling note, faint but real, and the sound wrapped around them like a shield.

Asher stepped forward last, lightning flickering faintly in his storm-grey eyes.

“The heir promised us graves,” he said, his voice thunderous. “But we are not digging. We are rising.”

He lifted his hand toward the half-built walls, glowing faintly with resonance.

“This is more than a home. This is our circle of fire. And if the Ledger comes, they will burn before we break.”

The pack erupted in howls, fierce and united.

Eliana stood with Esabella in her arms, her gaze locked with Asher’s across the firelight. In his eyes she saw not just storm, not just Alpha—but the man who had chosen to fight for her daughter as if she were his own.

The circle was stronger than ash. Stronger than shadow.

And soon, the heir would see just how strong.
